He Who Goes Hardest Gets the Most Opportunities

Roger E LearAs a kid I often heard this statement; “The early bird gets the worm.” Hummmmm, while I understand the point, I also notice that the implied underlying point is that there is only one worm to get. Flipping this underlying point and taking it one step further is the historically stated, “There aren’t enough opportunities.” I can’t find a job, or I can’t find a good mate or ( ), you fill in the blank. Here is a new cliché for new times; “He who goes hardest gets the most opportunities”.

Now, I just read an article on Diddy; like him, love him or hate him, he represents going hard for his business and his life. Sometimes people can miss the point when his current lifestyle is viewed. Yes, he has two assistants and other staff members helping him create results. He has producers, engineers and writers he works with to complete the creations he ultimately sells to the public.

However, in the same article a story was told of Diddy running 12 blocks to quickly pick up a demo tape from a studio and bring it back to the person he worked for as an intern. Not walking, not taking a cab or a car or a train, he ran! Not to be condescending, but to drive the point home, he was an intern and, in case you don’t know what that really means; he wasn’t getting paid!

He wasn’t running for a check, he was running for opportunity! He was running for the life he has now, today; before he had it. He was running to show he was willing to do more than the last person in his position who chose to walk or jog or ride. He was running to get to his current position. You know the old cliché, get in early and stay late, or, be the first one in and the last one to leave, etc. He was going hard to maximize the current thing and parlay it into a bigger next thing.

Never before in the history of man has the playing field been so level. With tenacious persistence anyone can get to anyone or do anything. That being said, while in some respects things may appear easier because there are more opportunities, the other side of that same point is; more people are gunning for those opportunities.

Today the only thing that will consistently set you apart from everyone else is the same as it has always been; you have to bring more to each opportunity than everyone else attempting to get it: skill, passion, drive and willingness to do more! Run, not walk! Go harder or go home!

I regularly remind myself of this fact and work to train myself so I can improve and perform better. There has never been, and never will be, a shortage of opportunity. But he who goes hardest will have the most!

Wisdom from the Grind: He who goes hardest gets the most opportunities!
