The Six Stages of Album Recording – Part 3

After all of the tracks have been recorded, it’s time for mixing. Mixing is the process of taking all of the parts that make up your song and combining them into a stereo (two channel) or surround (five channel) mix. For years the standard type of mix has been the stereo mix; taking every part of a song and placing them somewhere in what has been called the stereo field.

Day 4. Today we got our start around 3 pm again. As I type this I am listening to the “Tashe Theme” song created after the recording day was finished and I was just free-styling with an acoustic guitar sound on my keyboard. No accidents!

Day 3. Today we got started around 2 pm. We prayed for creative flow and gave thanks for all of the beauty which was accomplished on the previous two days. We began with a single goal in mind; have Natasha deliver the last of her pieces and finish the remaining musical drafts.

After the tracking, which is all about capturing the basic tracks, it’s time for overdubbing. Overdubbing is simply layering additional parts over the foundation tracks. Overdubs can include strings, synth pads, guitars, percussion and, of course, vocals.

It’s 12:37 am and I’m listening to some ol’ school music and typing my thoughts. I’ve had a full day dealing with local production business while preparing for the arrival of Natasha, an artist coming in from Montreal, Canada, to allow me the pleasure of producing an album to accompany a book she has written. In effect, I will be creating a musical score as background ambiance for her spoken word poetry, and the book as a whole.

So you want to produce your own album project? Producing a record involves lots of creativity, planning, focus, time and money. There was a time when a record label would take care of much of the process, from securing the right producer(s) and songs, to funding the recording process. At one time this was the norm, but today it is truly a luxury.
